Tarot is very personal and the cards in each deck are packed with loads of beautiful meanings. Intuition guides us towards these specific meanings, but we can also see by the symbolic depictions on each card what the author of that deck meant for that particular card to mean. If you're using a more traditional deck it doesn't stray away too far from ancient meanings, but some less traditional decks will. That's the wondrous beauty of Tarot!!
Just like any divination, it is not a hard science. It is important for each reader to decipher the meanings that they'll use in their own readings. Most of the time a journal will be used to document these lessons.
The card we have for you today is the Major Arcana card, The Fool. The Major Arcana is made up of generally twenty two cards. They are numbered from 0 to 21, and just as the minor suits have elemental associations, so does the major. It is often connection with the element of Spirit. The 22 Major Arcana cards show a journey through life filled with spiritual and self development. It begins with the Fool, which is the first card.
He is called a fool because only a simple soul has the innocent faith to undertake such a journey with all its hazards and pain. This is a destiny he must face which will lead to his ultimate growth into his true self. At the start of his trip, the Fool is a child. He is fresh and open to new things as well as spontaneous in his actions. He has arms opened wide and his head held high, and is ready to embrace whatever comes his way. However sometimes he is oblivious to the dangers that are around him and those which he is about to cross on his journey. The Fool is unaware of the hardships which he will face as he ventures out to face his destiny.
The number Zero associated with this card may seem like an odd number to have on a card, but it is most appropriate. Zero is seen as positioned between positive and negative. This number shows unexplored potential. With Zero there is nowhere to go but up, and this is the reason why it is such a good number to place with the card of The Fool.
The interpretation of The Fool card is something of a conundrum, for all is not as it may first appear. In most card depictions you will see The Fool standing strong, but unaware of some potential danger. In the Guilded Tarot you will see him dancing and juggling with an appearance of carelessness, but upon closer examination you will see that he has the signs of the zodiac in the air as he masterfully suspends them without dropping any to the floor. At the same time he spins a hoop and baton around his ankle. It would appear as though he is thoughtful and perhaps playful, but foolish is a harsh depiction. It would be a label placed upon him by someone who didn't truly know him. Just as we face these kind of labels in our own lives, but rarely is a label who someone places upon us completely true.
There is a strong sense of innocence and wisdom in this card. The meaning of this card upright would show newness, as well as the purity and open hearted energy of a child. This is generally considered a positive card. It is important to take time to be sure that you are looking where you are going. This card also shows deeper spiritual meaning or even a fresh start on some level. This card also shows a choice which has to be made that will be very important to your life. However, there is always different options available, and the choice should ultimately be made with careful consideration. If you are facing a lot of doubt in your life, The Fool shows us to be encouraging of ourselves and to believe in ourselves. Following our heart is always the best way to go. It shows that this is a time when you need to have some faith.
The meaning of this card reversed still shows newness with the purity and open hearted energy of a child. This shows that there is a need for a new beginning, but there is some hesitancy about making it happen. It can also show that there is some level of resistance toward new spiritual matters as well. Most of the time no matter what the position of this card, it shows a new beginning whether we're ready for it or not. It also shows disregard of the consequences of your actions. It points to living in the moment, and having no regard to the future. This card reversed shows a caution about potentially being taken advantage of or entering a deal or commitment where you don't fully understand the consequences of your actions and decisions. This is most always a warning to be aware of what you are doing, and to really think about the decisions you have to make before choosing.
Cosmic Blessings To You!!
